Causes of ARDS( adult respiratory distress syndrome) aka acute lung injury

Infection

1.Sepsis
2.Diffuse pulmonary infections
3.Viral, Mycoplasma, and Pneumocystis pneumonia; miliary tuberculosis

Gastric aspiration

Physical Injury and Pulmonary contusions

Mechanical trauma, including head injuries

Near-drowning

Fractures with fat embolism

Burns

Ionizing radiation

Oxygen toxicity

Smoke

Irritant gases and chemicals inhalation

Chemical Injury

Heroin or methadone overdose
Acetylsalicylic acid
Barbiturate overdose
Organic solvents
Drugs

Hematologic Conditions

Multiple transfusions
Disseminated intravascular coagulation

Pancreatitis

Uremia

Cardiopulmonary Bypass

What is COPD?

Basically includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
definition of emphysema is morphologic

chronic bronchitis is defined as the presence of chronic and recurrent cough with excessive mucus secretion for atleast 3 months in a year for 2 consecutive years

the two diseases usually coexist

cigarette smoking is the major contributing factor for both

irreversible airflow obstruction of COPD distinguishes it from asthma.
